Today is #WorldCancerDay, and I as think of the hashtag for this year #IAmandIWill I ponder on what action I can take to stand up, to speak up and to take action.
I had my yearly appointment with my oncologist today and she reminded me that I have been cancer-free now for 14 years, actually 2021 will be 15 years. Every day I wake up, I am grateful that I get to see another day and be around the people I care about. Every moment matters. Nothing can describe the feeling you have, lying in a hospital bed, afraid to go to sleep because you are not sure that you will wake up.
Living through cancer is horrible, the pain, the suffering by both yourself and your family, and the uncertainty of life. The poisons in chemotherapy that save your life, ravages through your body to leave you with a lifetime of reminders. A once healthy body becomes one that is immune compromised and vulnerable.
As a survivor, I endeavour to take care of this body as best as I can so that I can continue counting the years of how far I have come. I would encourage anyone, if you are not feeling well, go to the doctor get the tests you need to ensure that you stay healthy. Learn to recognize the signs that your body gives to you.
I have been blessed with many opportunities over the years and I am grateful for all of them. I feel that I was given a second chance by the Divine to live and how I live is a testament to my gratitude for this opportunity. I am grateful for the family and friends who stayed close to me and continue to do so. You truly do learn who really cares about you when you are faced with difficult times in your life.
If I could share only one thing it would be that each individual lives each moment to the fullest. Live in the moment, never pass up opportunities, try everything at least once, eat dessert with every meal, find a hobby that brings you peace, learn a new language, take chances, learn about absolutely everything, travel to new places, meet new people, and find ways to grow spiritually and personally to be the best you can be. Continuously seek joy in your journey.
